Job Summary

We are looking for a Technical Trainer III to join our Insourcing Solutions team, located in Cambridge, MA.

 

In the Technical Trainer III role, you will develop, deliver, document, and report technical skills in training programs involving both small and large laboratory animal species in accordance with the facility SOP’s, Charles River policy and applicable Federal regulations.

The essential duties of the Technical Trainer III are:

 

  • Research, develop, perform and document technical, husbandry and administrative training for employee training courses at CRADL and IS contract sites for blended learning including face-to-face and eLearning platforms conducted by the Insourcing Solutions Training Department.
  • Coordinate training schedules and activities with Human Resources, Operations and Customers.
  • Supports delivery of staff onboarding for CRADL Staff and Insourcing Solutions local contract staff, while delegating onboarding tasks when appropriate.
  • Formulate teaching outlines and determine appropriate instructional methods such as individual training, group instruction, demonstrations, meetings, and workshops.
  • Select and/or develop appropriate teaching aids such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials, and reference works.
  • Test trainees to measure progress and to evaluate effectiveness of technical training and employee’s level of knowledge and competency; periodically assess to identify potential areas of drift from written processes including gaps in practices, and in consultation with management, address through creation and/or revision of CRADL documents and staff training.
  • Reports metrics and other input for staffing of training program.
  • Monitor trainee technical proficiency and make on-the-spot corrections to observed skill deficiencies.

  • Maintain teaching laboratory area and equipment in compliance with applicable site SOPs.
  • Maintain accurate and complete training and teaching laboratory records and recommend improvements/changes to current policies and documentation.
  • Track and ensure availability of additional resources needed for implementation of the training program, including but not limited to electronic resources, procedure space availability, injectable dyes, carcasses, restrainers, etc. and make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Approve and collaborate with the Procurement coordinators and PI of the training protocol, the transfers of naïve animal to the training protocol a needed and in accordance with the 4Rs.
  • Implement a schedule of offering hands-on technique demonstration and training at regular intervals for staff, flexibly schedule skill set trainings and assessments that account for pre-existing skills and experience to target individual role responsibilities.
  • Identify client demand for specialty technique training, services, and pursue workshops, learning materials or private instruction to meet demand.
  • Report non-compliance or animal welfare concerns to the appropriate Animal Welfare Team member or IACUC office.
  • Work closely with Operations and IACUC to ensure client competency assessments are scheduled and performed as needed or directed.
  • Care for and maintain training animal colony in accordance with approved CRTC SOPs, animal care and use protocols, the Animal Welfare Act, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”, and Charles River policies.
  • Able to proficiently perform in basic knowledge of small animal biomethodology in the following techniques: dilution and dosing calculations, breeding, identifying common diseases and providing medical treatment as prescribed, doffing and donning PPE, anesthesia, rodent handling and restraint for mice and rats, rodent identification methods which include but are not limited to, ear notching, ear tagging, and tattooing, dosing and/or inoculation techniques (SQ, IP, Tail IV, PO, RO, etc.); blood collection (tail nick, submandibular, submental, cardia, jugular and saphenous), tumor measurement and body weights, anatomy (basic necropsy and tissue collection).

Who we are looking for?

The following are minimum qualifications related to the Technical Trainer III position:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in animal or laboratory science, business, or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum three years of previous training and successful “hands -on” experience of technical animal care procedures for both small and large animal species, plus an additional 3 years of laboratory animal science and/or veterinary technical job roles required. 
  • Experience in the development of technical training programs and modules required.  Experience in the delivery of instructor led training (ILT), synchronous on-line learning (e.g. webinars), and asynchronous (e-learning) methodologies preferred.
  • Ability to travel (up to 15%)
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted in lieu of the specific education and experience listed above.
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level (LATG) level preferred. Candidates with LAT certification may be considered and must achieve LATG certification within one year of hire/promotion.

 

The pay for this position is $43.00-48.06 USD per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
