Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway, where joining our Engineering Department means contributing to the backbone of our nation’s rail infrastructure. The System Electrician (Facilities) position maintains and repairs electrical systems, ensuring the safety and efficiency of railway operations.
This is a full-time position (40 hrs/wk) and subject to on call, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Frequent, extensive travel to and extended stays (sometimes days or weeks at a time) at job sites within the designated seniority region are required.
Training is on-the-job paid training, including preparation, equipment, and expenses for obtaining a CDL if needed.
Average annual salary is approximately $83,554 is for an employee with 3 – 5 years of seniority and depends on hours worked, which could include overtime, per diem, and other union-negotiated wages.
Key responsibilities may include:
Maintaining and installing of electrical systems in buildings and facilities, including high voltage (up to 15KV) overhead and underground distribution systems and low voltage (less than 600V) systems for commercial and industrial installations, HVAC systems, boilers, unit heaters, and furnaces.
Installing conduit, wire, lighting systems, and electrical services, maintaining electrical systems for cranes, turntables, lifts, and fueling stations, as well as using fire recovery equipment.
Using various tools and equipment for construction and maintenance such as bucket trucks, digger-derricks, trenchers, pole climbers, high precision measuring tools (micrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, recorders), hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.), and power tools (hand drills, power saws, etc.).
Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:
- Able to work in the US without company sponsorship now AND in the future.
- At least 21 years of age or will be by the anticipated start date listed above.
- Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
- Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear, and understand) English.
- Able to work safely in the above working conditions.
- Able to work the above shift/hours.
- Able to meet the above travel requirements.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Possess a valid Class A CDL or be able to obtain one within first 120 days employed.
- Able to visually distinguish colors – red, blue, green, yellow, and lunar (clear light)
- Ability to discriminate and differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) in the work environment.
- Four years minimum of verifiable electrical training and/or experience in troubleshooting and repairing electrical and PLC control systems.
- Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
- Able to perform work on uneven surfaces; occasionally climb ladders, poles and get on/off equipment, work from boom truck basket.
- Able to work in conditions with loud noise and fumes; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, walk, stand, sit for extended periods of time; use hand and power tools.
Union membership is with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and union dues are required per union agreement.
Seniority district transfers are handled per union agreement, are seniority based and require director approval.
