Main Purpose and Function

The main purpose of the position is to assist a Survey Technician in manual and technical work in all aspects of conducting varied survey assignments including field and office related duties. The position assists in moderately complex survey work. 

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists a Survey Technician in the surveying of streets, lanes, and parks and others as assigned.  Operates and maintains survey equipment such as total stations, survey controllers, auto-levels, and basic hand tools

  • Performs physical work including but not limited to locating  survey pins, plugs and monuments, staking, exposing shallow utility covers and markers, clearing weeds, bush and other obstacles

  • Performs traffic control duties including creating basic traffic control plans, setting up traffic control devices, and acting as a traffic control person

  • Keeps field notes, sketches; makes computations and calculations as required

  • Office duties include data editing and input along with basic drafting using AutoCad.

  • Conducts field investigations, filing, and pickup and delivery of equipment or vehicles, supplies, and notices. 

  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of secondary school diploma including courses in grade 12 mathematics or pre-calculus along with survey-related work experience and training, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the methods, techniques and equipment used in Municipal survey work.

  • Working knowledge of office methods, procedures and practices.

  • Good knowledge of municipal design and construction of water main system.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective respectful working relationships with staff, and exercise tact and diplomacy in relating to members of the public.

  • Ability to take direction from a rotating group of survey technicians in relation to specific assignments and carry out work diligently, efficiently, and safely.

  • Ability to accurately read, draw and interpret engineering drawings.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately, neatly and rapidly

  • Skill in the use and care of surveying tools including total stations and levels.

  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions including walking, lifting and carrying equipment over long distances on uneven terrain.

  • Sufficient physical strength to permit the lifting and carrying of equipment used in the work

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work safely in all traffic conditions and on construction sites

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is a requirement of this position

  • The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities
