- Responsible for ensuring compliance with domestic and international hazardous materials regulations, as pertains to the preparation, offering and shipment of company materials (COMAT) identified as hazardous materials in transportation. Also, contributes to the safety of company personnel, property, passengers, and any other personnel that may come into contact with or be affected by hazardous COMAT in transport, communicating these requirements through Training Development, Instruction and Compliance.
What you’ll do
- Ensure compliance with domestic and international hazardous materials regulations as they pertain to the preparation, offering, acceptance, shipping, carriage, and transportation of hazardous materials in commerce.
- Provide technical management of the DG/HM Compliance programs encompassing all aspects of Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) in transport by air/ground in accordance with DOT and FAA regulations.
- Ensure awareness and compliance by all departments with DOT and FAA Regulations concerning the packaging, shipment, acceptance and handling of Hazardous Materials and other DG related tasks.
- Monitor and report Inflight Thermal Runaways to Federal Government agency (NRC)
- Coordinate with Maintenance, Engineering, Inventory Management, Purchasing, Ramp, Cargo, PPS etc. to ensure that company parts and materials are correctly handled and identified in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Participate in various Working Groups (Lithium Battery, Airport Working Group,etc.), interface with Safety, Environmental and other internal meetings to ensure that appropriate hazardous materials consideration is given in related functional areas.
- Interact with external industry and regulatory contacts (Vendors, COSTHA, PHMSA, IATA, FAA, and FMCSA).
- Monitor and update DG/HM guidance in reference material, manuals and in automated systems (iNOTOC, iCargo, CERS, ETQ, HAZMAAD/HazRaps, K2 etc.).
- Administer the Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Materials Regulatory Compliance Audit program including conducting station audits (traveling is required), follow-up station audits to FAA Compliance Actions, development and maintenance of Station Audit Checklist, coordination of and tracking of audits, and station responses to Corrective Action Plan.
- Investigate DG/HM incidents and/or discrepancies and develop measures to prevent reoccurrences.
- Ensure compliance with all specification packaging requirements and coordinate testing and report maintenance for specification packages.
- Complete and assist with RMW through SMS (Safety Management System).
- Review, approve and create hazardous materials profile for shipping by reviewing new item requests through K2.
- Provide guidance to base and field personnel regarding hazardous materials issues.
- Assist in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety (FMCS) Regulations in accordance with FMCS program and annual audit of the program.
- Implement seasonal warnings to customers regarding holidays, fireworks, etc.
- Support maintenance and compliance of Undeclared Dangerous Goods Reporting program.
- Ad Hoc projects and programs as required.
- Provide support to customers through 24/7 on call rotation.
All you’ll need for success
Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in transportation, engineering, science, hazardous materials, or related discipline
- Minimum 5 years related work experience required – aviation, regulatory, audits, and compliance experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
- Knowledge and experience in domestic and international hazardous materials regulations: 14 CFR, 49 CFR, IATA/ICAO, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety (FMCS) Regulations.
- Knowledge and experience in dangerous goods/hazardous materials regulations, 14 CFR, 49 CFR, IATA/ICAO, and Federal Motor Carriers Safety (FMCS) Regulations.
- Experience and working knowledge with iCargo, iNOTOC, SCEPTRE, COUPA, CERS, K2, RMW, HazRaps, or AA financial/invoice systems/application desired.
Skills, Licenses & Certifications
- Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Materials 49 CFR and IATA/ICAO certificate preferred but not required.
- Presentation skills with the ability to articulate complex requirements to large audiences who possess a wide variety of subject matter expertise.
- Capability to take dangerous goods/hazardous materials requirements and synthesize data clearly and concisely.
- Ability to follow through and complete projects as individual contributor or collaborate as a team member with effective drive for results.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task workload.
- Experience in working with U.S. Regulatory agencies (FAA, PHMSA FMCS).
- Experience in Stores, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Cargo and Logistics or Aviation Maintenance is a plus.
- Experience in working with vendors and industry organizations.
- Work independently with multiple work groups within and outside of American Airlines.
- Ability to cope with stressful situations, work variable hours and travel as required with overnight hotel stays.
- Prior project management experience is essential.
- Strong organizational skills required with the ability to manage numerous projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
- Independent judgment and decision-making capabilities are essential.
- Knowledge of Tableau is preferred.
- The ability to read, write, and converse in Spanish is a plus.
- Proficient computer skills are required with knowledge of information systems and database management (word, excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook).
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally (as needed).
