The Certified Pharmacy Technician III works under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist to provide services to Pharmacy customers. The Pharmacy Technician supports the Pharmacist in providing Pharmaceutical Care. The main areas of responsibility include one or more of the following: Medication History Tech, Chemo/Infusion Center Tech, Inventory Control Tech/Buyer, Registrar II, Technology Support Tech or Tech Education Coordinator. Serves as a mentor to other staff. Other tasks, roles or responsibilities may be required as appropriate, needed or assigned.

  • Medication History Tech:  Identify candidates for medication reconciliation based on specified criteria and communicate with Nursing staff regarding med history interview and status of patient,  Work with the patient, family, caregivers, physician offices, skilled nursing facilities, outside pharmacies and other healthcare providers to determine a current list of medications,  Address barriers to adherence such as medication cost, regimen, transportation, etc, Prescreen patients for Carilion Medication Assistance Program (CMAP) by determining the patient’s ability to pay and gaps in prescription drug coverage
  • Chemo/Infusion Center Tech: Preparation of sterile and non-sterile hazardous medications for inpatient and/or outpatient adult, pediatric, NICU, ED and OR patients following USP797 and USP800 guidelines., Use of proper technique and materials for cleaning equipment, rooms, tables, bins and product in a sterile hazardous environment including compounding, ante and buffer rooms., Decontamination of hazardous product prior to labeling and sending to floor.
  • Inventory Control Tech/Buyer: Manages medication and supply inventories through inventory management, purchasing, receiving, distribution and returns including documentation of all required invoices and paperwork., Processes and manages returns to the wholesalers, 3rd party return companies or other vendors, Manages medications through the carousel, automated dispensing cabinet, Epic and other relevant technology, Develops inventory reports for each facility, Assists in the formulary review process, Investigates and assists in managing drug shortages and backorders and provides alternative medication sources
  • Registrar II: Performs daily, weekly and monthly audits as required by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy or other third party reviewers, Maintains auditing databases, Provides feedback on audits to management including nursing leaders, pharmacy management, the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) and other third parties as appropriate
  • Pharmacy Automation Technician : Facilitates the coordination, maintenance and utilization of pharmacy automation systems and databases including but not limited to carousels, pharmacy vault automated storage system and automated dispensing cabinets, Serves as the point person and content expert with maintenance, service and resolution of issues with pharmacy automation including the installation and expansion of pharmacy automation and functionality, Optimizes efficient use of automation through development and analysis of reports including inventory management and quality assurance.

What We Require:

Education: All applicants are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course is preferred. Successful completion of Pharmacy Service Line competencies within 6 months of hire. For the Inventory Control Tech/Buyer, Pharmacy Automation Specialist and Tech Education Coordinator positions an Associate or Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Experience: Previous pharmacy experience including IV admixture is preferred. Technician Education Coordinator is required to have 2 years of hospital inpatient pharmacy experience. Registrar II is required to have 2 years of pharmacy experience with 3 years preferred including a background in auditing, database management or related fields preferred. The ICT/Buyer is required to have 5 years of pharmacy experience with 1 year of inventory experience preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration:
Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals required. Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 9 months of hire.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to maintain familiarity with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and focused on attention to detail/accuracy. Must be customer service oriented. Requires knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard. Must be able to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.
