The Role
The Lead Network Security Engineer is a member of the Professional Security Services team that is responsible for managing and securing the Lumen customer firewall products including but not limited to maintaining customer Firewall and VPN devices. In addition, Network Security Engineers are responsible for evaluating current capabilities and predicting future needs, then collaborate with internal stakeholders, vendors, and peers to define, and pursue these capabilities.
The Main Responsibilities
- Perform as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for existing environments, mentor lower-level engineers, and assume ownership and accountability in areas of recognized technical expertise.
- Perform high-level trouble identification, interpretation of standards, and implement resolution for internal network security problems or issues.
- Develop and maintain written procedures to maintain technical accuracy.
- Maintain a multitude of firewall vendor solutions across various environments (FortiNet, Palo Alto Networks, Sonic Wall, etc.)
- Respond to, remediate, and document network security related alerts and issues not limited to dashboard alerts, tickets, emails, or phone calls.
- Participate in on-call rotation.
- Able to work other shifts as needed based on business requirements.
- Maintain security of the network by ensuring firewall rules meet company policy and configuring best practice security measures on devices.
What We Look For in a Candidate
- Must possess broad technical knowledge of current and emerging technologies used both within the service provider security, data center, cloud technologies and network infrastructure.
- Working experience with firewall technologies, with FortiNet and Palo Alto Networks experience being preferred.
- Working experience with data center platforms, such as service provider edge/core devices, Ethernet switch platforms, load balancers, etc.
- Experience in application development/code assessment/reversing PHP, Python, UNIX shell, ELK.
- Experience with automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef and working with various types of APIs: REST, SOAP, etc.
- Experience with common computing platforms, including Windows Servers, RedHat & Ubuntu Linux Servers
- Experience with system, network, or security administration/engineering in a Unix-based environment.
- Experience using industry leading security solutions and technologies to deliver customer facing services:
- Access control and firewalls/UTM devices, SASE, Web Application Firewall (WAF), Web Content Filtering, Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDS/IPS) systems, Remote Network Access (IPsec VPN, SSL), Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam (AV/AS), Email and Messaging Security, Managed End-point Detection and Response (MEDR), DNS security system.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to successfully interact as a member of the engineering team and effectively collaborate in a diverse, multi-functional department.
- 10+ years of progressively expanding responsibilities and experience in telecommunications, networking, technology management or security operations.
- Security Certifications from vendors, such as Palo Alto, Zscaler, Fortinet, Netskope and Versa networks
- Professional/technical certifications, such as CISSP, CISM or CISA.
- Understanding of technology lab testing strategies
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Compensation
The starting salary for this role differs based on the employee’s primary work location. Employees typically do not start at the top of the range, though compensation depends on each individual’s qualifications.
Location Based Pay Ranges
$94,420 – $125,890 in these states: AR, ID, KY, LA, ME, MS, NE, SC, and SD.
$99,390 – $132,510 in these states: AZ, AL, FL, GA, IN, IA, KS, MO, MT, NM, ND, OH, OK, PA, TN, UT, VT, WV, WI, and WY.
$104,360 – $139,140 in these states: CO, HI, MI, MN, NV, NH, NC, OR, and RI.
$109,330 – $145,770 in these states: AK, CA, CT, DE, DC, IL, MD, MA, NJ, NY, TX, VA, and WA.
