The Emergency Psychiatry (EP) Assessment Specialist provides assessment and consultation, working collaboratively with Carilion care teams and external professionals to develop appropriate patient treatment plans and placement for behavioral health patients coming to us through self-referrals, external agencies and hospitals, individual referrals and through our internal departments such as the ED. Ensures that the patients are placed in settings which provide the appropriate level of care and resources for their individual needs. Provides 24/7 coverage.
Clinically assesses individuals and makes treatment recommendations which represent sound clinical judgment. Manages the multiple factors and variables that interplay in the decision-making process for determining and following through with treatment recommendations. Balances and coordinates the needs of referral sources, physicians and clients/patients. Manages multiple situations at one time–of which many are crisis oriented. Provides appropriate feedback and follow-up to all all involved in in the referral process. Understands the symptomatology of psychiatric and addictive disorders, and utilizes good judgment in knowing when to consult the EP Director, Medical Director, Psychiatrist, or other professional. Has good working knowledge of the psychiatric community, both public and private. Provides support through communication, organizing, prioritizing, facilitating, and problem solving, in order to ensure the success of appropriate patient placement, excellent customer service, and appropriate throughput. The individual must possess the ability to organize, prioritize and frequently shift prioritizes in an unpredictable environment.
- Provides assessment, consultation and referral services to individuals who are self-referred, or referred by physicians, counselors, agencies and other referral services.
- Provides assessment and consultation for in-patients on medical units and in the ED at Carilion Medical Facilities when requested by the attending physician.
- Coordinates and facilitates treatment/referral recommendations with the psychiatrist and other physicians when there are also medical issues to be considered in the placement and treatment plan.
- Documents on all pertinent intake information in the electronic medical record.
- Establishes good working rapport with internal and external providers and care givers. Utilizes effective communication skills I a team environment.
- Coordinates the patient’s admission internally and externally by serving as a liaison between EP Triage services, the physician, nursing staff, other mental health professionals, community services and family members as appropriate.
- Follows up on all referral inquiries which require further information or action regarding intake or admission procedures.
- Maintains current knowledge of the civil commitment process and coordinates involuntary admissions with the local Community Services Board Crisis Service when indicated.
- Completes pre-certification and authorization with insurance companies to verify and obtain approval for hospital admissions.
- Must be knowledgeable of external resources available in the community in order to access appropriate resources for the patient.
- Assists with record keeping, statistics, and call tracking in order to provide accurate data to the Director and physicians in order to better plan budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Demonstrates the ability to work within a technologically advances environment to facilitate patient throughput.
Hours will be Monday-Thursday 9p-7a
What We Require:
Education: Masters Degree in Psychology or Social Work required.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years experience in Psychiatry, or mental health agencies required.
Licensure/Certification: De-escalation training must be successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained going forward. Must be able to obtain AHA BLS-HCP.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Meets documented age specific criteria to provide crisis assessment services to adult, child and adolescent clients/patients. Excellent communication and customer service skills required . Strong computer skills required. Must be flexible and be willing to work as a team player.
