The Opportunity
As a Senior Data Governance Specialist, you will take a more active role in driving data governance initiatives and ensuring adherence to the organization’s data governance framework. You will work across multiple business units and data stakeholders to understand data requirements, resolve data quality issues, and promote data governance principles. This role ensures quality, consistency, and security of data across the organization.
Your Key Responsibilities:
• Implement data management best practices across various business domains (e.g., data quality, data lineage, metadata management), ensuring consistency and compliance.
• Configure, maintain and optimize data governance tools (data catalog, business glossary), ensuring they are current and effectively utilized.
• Develop and maintain glossary, data dictionaries, data catalogs, data lineage and other data management & governance facets.
• Define and manage data governance standards, cataloging processes/procedures, templates and stewardship workflows.
• Conduct advanced data profiling and quality checks, identifying and addressing data quality issues proactively.
• Collaborate with data stewards to define data quality rules.
• Implement data quality monitoring and reporting using the data governance tools.
• Monitor and improve data quality metrics to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
• Conduct analysis of data quality issues, establish remediation plans, and monitor data governance performance metrics for continuous improvement.
• Conduct root cause analysis for data issues and collaborate with stakeholders to implement remediation strategies.
• Appropriately classify and tag data based on Popular’s Data Classification & Security standards.
• Assist in ensuring compliance with legal standards and mitigating risks to protect sensitive data through robust data governance practices. Collaborate with IT, data risk & compliance, data regulations, and fraud teams.
• Support cybersecurity architects in reviewing the IDMC Platform to ensure compliance with data security standards and organizational data policies.
• Participate in the creation and enforcement of data privacy policies and programs, ensuring cybersecurity strategies are implemented across cloud data and analytics platforms.
• Assist in the development and implementation of data governance frameworks across business units.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote and support the adoption of data governance stewardship roles and responsibilities.
• Support the adoption of data stewardship roles and responsibilities throughout the organization, assisting in data stewardship initiatives and ensuring stakeholder engagement.
• Stay updated on the latest technologies and data trends to enhance the organization’s data and analytics platform capabilities. Focus on tools like Informatica IDMC, AWS, Scripting, and SQL.
• Help define data lifecycle management processes (data creation, storage, usage, etc.).
• Review and approve deliverables prepared by the data governance specialists and supporting teams.
• Gather and analyze data governance requirements for projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory standards.
• Collaborate with teams across data security, data modeling, data integration, data architecture, and business units. Work with data analysts, data stewards, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders to support the integrity, security, and effective management of data across the organization.

• Responsible for: Implementing data governance processes and managing data lifecycle tasks across specific business units. Completing the data classification and sensitivity assessments. Ensuring correct Data governance tool configuration. Establishing Data Quality rules and managing resolutions.
• Accountable for: Ensuring data management best practices are applied and data quality is maintained. Ensuring Business and technical metadata are maintained accurately
• Consulted on: Data governance tool framework
• Informed on: Department and company-wide initiatives.
To qualify for the role, you must have:
• Bachelor’s degree in information system management, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in data management, data governance and data compliance roles, in either legacy or cloud environments.
• 8+ years of experience in SQL scripting and data analysis
• Solid knowledge of data governance tools (Informatica, Alation, Collibra) and frameworks.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with platforms such as Informatica IDMC, PowerCenter, AWS (Athena, RDS, S3), Snowflake, Oracle Exadata, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, Hadoop, Cloudera, and RedShift.
• Proficiency in using SAS Enterprise Guide, Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, SAP Business Objects, and SSRS.
• Experience in developing and maintaining dashboards and reports to support business insights.
• Ability to collaborate cross-functionally in data governance initiatives.
• Proficiency in establishing a common data language, including elements like Data Dictionary, Data Lineage, and Business Glossary.
• Experience in identifying and classifying Enterprise Key Data Elements (Critical Data Elements).
• Experience in maintaining an Enterprise Business Glossary.
• Experience in conducting data quality assessments.
• Background in Enterprise Data Stewardship.
• Demonstrated ability to improve data processes.
• Competence in defining Business Requirements, Functional Designs, and Technical Specifications.
• Familiarity with Data Regulatory and Compliance Frameworks, including the development of Policies, Standards, Guidelines, Controls, and Procedures.
• Familiarity with GDPR, CCPA, SOX, FDIC, AML, CECL regulations.
• Strong problem-solving and methodological skills.
• Experience with Agile, Scrum, and Kanban methodologies.
• Ability to effectively communicate data governance concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders, including both technical and non-technical audiences.
