Project Overview:

For more than 70 years, Atomic Weapons Enterprise (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous At Sea Deterrent. They use nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities. Like Bechtel, they create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything they do. From building state-of-the-art facilities, to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, the management of Environment, Safety, Health and Wellbeing underpins all activities at AWE. The Materials Capability project is a part of the wider Future Materials Campus (FMC) endeavour and is responsible for providing recovery and storage facilities for Uranium and Plutonium

Job Summary:

We are looking for a proactive and driven Mechanical Engineer who will support a Project Engineering Manager as the technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of mechanical activities. You will support an external design team by ensuring correct and timely production of mechanical deliverables, acting as intelligent customer. You will be responsible for understanding client requirements and providing relevant technical guidance to the design team. You will be responsible for the quality of technical information coming out of the design team, ensuring that it is relevant, timely and accurate. You will assist in detailed design engineering efforts, which may include the delivery of technical documents, execution of engineering schedule activities, quality checks, and overall project delivery. In addition, you will participate in design reviews, and assure comments are implemented by facilitating the resolution of comments to ensure the delivery of approved design products.

You will have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems. In addition, you will help others and respond to requests for help in solving technical or procedural problems or issues. You will be responsible for assisting with discipline work process execution in a technically adequate manner and in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and coordinate detailed phase of engineering work in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standard.
  • Set and check work related to mechanical disciplines such as HVAC systems, Process gas systems, Mechanical Handling equipment, Materials Handling equipment, Bespoke radiological control apparatus (gloveboxes, access control systems, etc.)
  • Apply engineering principles for the analysis and design of structures, systems, and components. Influence the outcome of technical issue resolution within the discipline/function, as well as with third parties (customer, suppliers, and regulators).
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Have extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials, and applications of 2-D and 3-D computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) to resolve engineering problems. Ensure the design is cost effective, in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental regulations, customer requirements and engineering codes & standards.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders
  • Participate in interdisciplinary and cross-functional reviews of documents and deliverables. Effectively communicate design requirements and status across the project, and to customers, vendors, construction, and other organisations.
  • Coordinate with the Systems Engineering group and other groups in development of project and system requirements.
  • Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university or college with extensive and relevant EPC/EPCM design experience on major infrastructure projects.
  • Must have working knowledge of engineering procedures, covering discipline deliverables, production & control.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design software (e.g. AFT Arrow, Mathcad etc.) or similar applications.
  • Strong knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards, engineering processes and design criteria.
  • General understanding of mechanical design processes and deliverables of other engineering disciplines.
  • Experience working with design and construction contracts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to obtain a SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of related non‐reactor nuclear codes, standards, best practice non-reactor nuclear/hazardous mechanical confinement systems, and knowledge in generation of engineering documents in a nuclear environment.
  • Experience in front end design and equipment selection for nuclear, or nuclear chemical facilities including cranes, and other material handling equipment.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Typically requires bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) with relevant work experience
  • Extensive experience in front end design and equipment selection for nuclear, or nuclear chemical facilities including cranes, gloveboxes and other material handling equipment.
  • Experience in supervising teams of mechanical discipline engineers.
