The Role

The Planning Engineer II applies approved technologies and architectures to specific requirements for additions to support growth and new services at Lumen.

Location

This is a work from home position within the U.S.

The Main Responsibilities

  • Develops/defines strategic network plans for the implementation of new network expansion deployments or augments to existing network elements for Switches and Routers. 
  • Prepares plans and specifications, to include high level overview and requirements to scope project including switch, router, power and space.
  • Analyzes trending reports to determine areas requiring network expansion, hardware and/or bandwidth augmentation/optimization.
  • Ensures the use of the most feasible, practical, and economical methods for completing the work. Provides cost data to support capital planning and budgeting.
  • Monitors and controls project expenditures. 
  • Skilled in strategic planning, project management and/or engineering. 
  • Analyzes layer 3 IP and Layer 2 Ethernet network systems including planning, designing, evaluating, selecting architectural design and integration into current network.
  • Collaborates with Architecture and Engineering to resolve interoperability challenges in the current and strategic plans of the network.
  • Needs minimal direction and guidance for most tasks.

What We Look For in a Candidate

Required:

  • 5+ years professional telecommunications experience and a bachelor’s degree or higher. 
  • High attention to detail with intense focus on high quality output. 
  • Ability to successfully prioritize and multitask across multiple projects. 
  • Demonstrable academic and technical understanding of LAN/WAN internetworking technologies and protocols, including TCP/IP, Ethernet, ISIS, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VPLS, QoS, L2VPN, L3VPN, multicast, and IPv4/IPv6. 
  • Technical experience with various Cisco, Juniper, and/or Nokia switch and router platforms. 
  • Strong data trending and analysis skills. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Proven track record as adept and effective project manager. 
  • Exceptional intra and interdepartmental collaboration and communications skills. 
  • Strong computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Positive and professional attitude and demeanor, and ability to work both independently and within a team. 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in related field and 2+ years of related experience 
  • Experience in an engineering role that included a substantial business/financial focus
  • Computer scientist knowledge, to include data analytics, predictive analysis, automation development, and reporting. 

Compensation

The starting salary for this role differs based on the employee’s primary work location. Employees typically do not start at the top of the range, though compensation depends on each individual’s qualifications.

 

Location Based Pay Ranges

 

$63980 – $85300 in these states: AR, ID, KY, LA, ME, MS, NE, SC, and SD.
$67340 – $89780 in these states: AZ, AL, FL, GA, IN, IA, KS, MO, MT, NM, ND, OH, OK, PA, TN, UT, VT, WV, WI, and WY.
$70710 – $94270 in these states: CO, HI, MI, MN, NV, NH, NC, OR, and RI.
$74070 – $98760 in these states: AK, CA, CT, DE, DC, IL, MD, MA, NJ, NY, TX, VA, and WA.

 

As with the pay range variety that’s based on the region of a country, specific offers are determined by various factors such as experience, education, skills, certifications and other business needs.
