BWXT in Mt. Vernon is growing the team. We are looking to add an Heat Treatment Process Engineer to be the subject matter expert of the heat treatment process. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a matrixed organization of Manufacturing, Quality, Tooling, Engineering and Project Management to make nuclear components used to power Navy aircraft carriers and submarines.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Effective communications with all levels of the organization.
- Daily engineering support to the furnace operations team by ensuring compliance to contract requirements and technical procedures through training, process audits and process improvements.
- Provide oversite for heat treatment on a regular basis, especially during cooling.
- Ensure all BWXT heat treatment procedures, work instructions, and furnace thermocouple layouts comply with customer requirements and update these documents as required.
- Ensure that heat treatment processes in the assigned area comply with MIL-STD-1684 and AMS2750.
- Create efficiency reports for heat treatment processes and monitor heat treatment run times to ensure that performance is repeatable.
- Identify areas most impacted by poor efficiency and conduct production efficiency improvement projects in heat treatment process areas.
- Monitor quality performance for heat treatment process areas to identify early negative trends and help to drive corrective actions.
- Identify areas for needed quality improvement and conduct continuous improvement activities for heat treatment process areas.
- Maintain an FMEA for the assigned process area and regularly update the document as new failure modes are identified.
- Drive preventative action for identified failure modes as well as potential human performance concerns.
- Lead readiness and startup activities for new equipment installation and post maintenance returns to service for heat treatment process areas.
- Lead implementation of new technology or First of a Kind Activities (FOAK) where applicable for heat treatment process areas.
- Assess the system health of assigned heat treatment process areas to include reliability and obsolescence management.
- Develop or improve SOPs or work instructions for assigned heat treatment process areas.
- Support operator training development for heat treatment process areas.
- Document lessons learned and best practices and incorporate this information into the heat treatment process area SOP and work instructions.
- Ability to work First, Second or Weekend shifts as critical work demands.
- Limited travel to other BWXT sites or suppliers.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or in a related technical field.
- Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Highly self-motivated, directed and organized with strong work ethic and keen attention to detail.
- Excellent math, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to stand for up to 8 hours.
- Ability to move or lift 25 lbs.
- Ability to work at heights in a scissor or boom lift.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Manufacturing process support experience.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Lite for 2-D thermocouple location sketch generation.
- Lean/Op Ex Kaizen/DMAIC training.
- Proficiency with SAP.

Pay: $63,000.00 – $99,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Indiana (US-IN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $63,000.00 and $99,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed ‘at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
